The darkly funny period piece about three women's struggle to feel powerful in a patriarchal world is as stirring as it is strange. As Weisz and Stone fight for the love of the queen through sexual favors, the audience is taken on a deliciously twisted ride full of desire and the corrupting force of power. Every performance in this movie is top notch and it's so beautifully shot and scored that you can actually feel good about watching a quality film afterwards. Booksmart is a classic high school romp about geeky friends, Molly and Amy, who try and attend a cool high school party before they graduate. Molly and Amy both want to hook up with their crush, and it just so happens that Molly's run of the mill bro with a heart of gold is your run of the mill Aloof skater girl. The movie did a great job of treating Amy's story line as normal while not making it into a straight narrative. Amy reckons with specifically queer concerns, such as an equal level of interest and confusion as to what lesbian sex is, but those concerns aren't ruled by a fear of her queer identity.
